Canada has no national myth

Canada has no national myth, no organic folk heroes, no symbol of archetypal Canadian-ness. For all its benefits, we’re a country (but not a people) without an imagination.

The rhetoric is overheated, but cowboys are to us what Homeric heroes were to Athenians during the age of Pericles.

Trust between people and institutions

I think it’s obviously true that it damaged trust between people and institutions, including artistic ones. But I also think it was a flash in the pan, it’s more or less over, and everybody’s moving onto other things.

Woke-ism and culture

I do think that “woke-ism” has basically destroyed writing culture and the movies, as well as education and most online social discourse.

Language characteristics

This is interesting because I’ve heard Canadian English is taking on Californian characteristics, and this quiz told me I’m closest to San Jose. That said, I still have a chequing account, use the washroom, and wait in a lineup.

Literary scene in Toronto

Brandon Westlake and I attempted to discover some of Toronto’s literary scene, and what we found was a dive bar that kept old zines in the hottest room imaginable, and a witchcraft store with all the lights off, which you could only access by calling someone and having them buzz you in. Further research is necessary, but preliminary results say it sucks here.

Discussion on political restrictions

The only political position I have: Anyone who says restrictions are necessary in order to keep words and images out of the hands of those incapable of understanding them is lying.
