I’ve written a handful of poems that include my dad, and since today is Father’s Day, I thought I’d share one of the most recent — “Existential OCD at the Visitation” — which was included in my chapbook, The blades of grass are dreaming (Anstruther Press, 2025).

Thank you for the feature of The Unravelling of Ou!
I think my favourite moment is when Minoo is in high school, and she goes to a heavy metal concert with Kit, a girl she’s falling for, and they get trapped in a mosh pit. I kept picturing this in the style of that other great blend of Iranian and Canadian culture, Universal Language, although really this is its own thing. The Unravelling of Ou is a debut novel, but that’s sort of a misnomer as Ghadery is an accomplished poet and short story writer, with several prior books to her name.
The Unravelling of Ou is, among other things, a novel about internalized shame—how many women are taught to fear and despise their bodies so much, it doesn’t occur to them they could experience desire for people with bodies like theirs.
