I come here often
Think I’m drawn by the trees
Bending Beckoning
Dappled light
Translucent leaves
Great strong centres
Such deep welcome
In their silence
Such joy
In their beauty
Such wisdom
in their staying power

Prompt 2
2 Corinthians 12
The Thorn in my Side
I knew a man caught up in paradise
Who stepped beyond this flesh curtain
Long enough to see for certain
Sights that strive against the eyes
He walked a path that angels trod
Weaving his way through seraphim
Ducking mighty cherubim
Onward to the house of God
There he walked among the martyr
Men who'd bent but did not break
Women who had faced the stake
Who's belief they would not barter
On beyond untainted orchard
Onward over the crystal lake
Leaving memories in his wake
On to the house of the lord
Finally he stood at the foot
Of a cliff at eternity's edge
Staring out over the ledge
At a people caked in soot
Out over his former life
His mangled body fraught with flaws
His weary spirit bound with laws
That twisted his side like a knife
And at that moment he understood
It wasn't in his fate to stay
In mountains where the angels play
He must return to cities crude
And all of heaven heard his cry
"Please take this thorn from my side
That I might stand with pride
Before it is my day to die"
But pride was not to be his fate
And as with all who are loyal
But not yet anointed with oil
Until his day of glory waits

#1 not too strong on imagery, but I'm a work in progress too 😅
El Roi
There’s a Well
In this desert
That belongs to a pregnant slave girl
And to a runaway, greedy son
And to a woman used by too many men
And to me

Isaiah 30:20
And though you wake up ev’ry day
And make a soon consumed hay,
Which is discarded by a way
That has no care for toil,
And though you often sift the wheat
For tiny kernels, so to eat
And stave off hunger’s daily greet
While burning all your oil,
And though you build a tower high
And bake your bricks to reach the sky
And seek your stature to defy,
Which cause cannot but spoil,
Your Teacher will not cause himself to hide.
And though you drink a bitter cup
When regular fresh tears you sup
Of broken hopes and cries gone up
Which ne’er yet had an answer,
And though the dreams are not forgot
Which in the cold, bright light is rot
All riddled with the sores of Lot
Which multiply like cancer,
And though you bend down to complain
And ask why I have not sent rain,
Forgetting ev’ry past refrain
To stone my own rain-dancer,
Within your sight your Teacher shall be spied.
And with a better meal shall you commune,
And every inclination will attune,
By day with priests or at a pagan moon:
If you will wait for me, I will abide.

I have been missing Fridays as I get deep into doctoral work. I am thankful for the prompts in this season where it’s hard to come in real time. I will attest though, my creativity flourishes in the mostly silent one hour together.

Prompt #1
"Living Room"
There is a doll on the floor
next to a car
next to a tiny bed
next to an upturned bin
And next to that is my youngest
playing, with a piece of string

Prompt 3:
Spring
The golden field lies fallow in the sun
where buttercups and dandelions grow
ruminating cows feed in unison
and long-eared hares in bounding circles go
along the dikes where whispering grasses sway
as bicycles drift past in quiet streams
canals lie still beneath the height of day
to mirror skies that shimmer soft as dreams
A distant bell tolls out across the land
the scent of earth and water fills the air
and in the light of evening as if planned
the world is hushed unburdened of its care

Prompt 2
John 10:11-13
The Field Hand
“The wolf is at the Gate now!”
I heard the Field Hand cry
"I've seen him from the shadows
By the gleaming of his Eye
He comes to fall among the flock
Like Sennachrib of old
For we are few of number
And Winter's made him bold
He'll fall among the wool
And gorge himself to fill
And none of us will get free
From this Fly speck of a hill
Let's take our leave of absence
From this mangy worthless flock
We've but one life to live
Let's not waste it on this stock
If one must foot the bill
It won't be me that pays
I'm getting off this hill
And the wolf can have his day

The Shepherd
“The wolf is at the gate now!”
I heard the shepherd say
"For I've seen him on the hilltop
And I've heard his reaver's bay
He comes to our small fold
To make himself a feast
And we will lose our flock
If we cannot stop this beast
I've watched this herd from birth
And watched these lamblings rise
How could I count my worth
If I left them their demise?
I'll stand between the pass
My sheepdogs at my side
And ward away its wrath
And reclaim my feral pride
So I will take the gate
And make myself the lock
For I would be no shepherd
If I now forsook my flock?
