Cindy Laverty

I spent my whole life pleasing everyone, while conveniently forgetting about myself. But something happened when I met my 70 year old self. I'm here to talk about life, self care, pets, add a little wisdom and hopefully some sass and humor.

I spent my whole life pleasing everyone - until I 70-year-old me. Now I write about independence, self-worth, aging with grace, and what really matters at this stage of life. Honest stories, hard-earned wisdom and just enough sass to keep it real.

The Diagnosis that Changed My Life

Was there an actual date when manners just flew the coop? Did I miss this date or has it been a gradual decline? Sadly, I think social media has a lot to do with this. The irony is that the way people speak on social media doesn’t seem very social. Call me old fashioned but I’m a big believer in please and thank you.

Life is tough

Life is tough. Life is challenging. Life is painful. Life is grief. But life is also this magical, beautiful journey. Who you spend your time with; how you process the challenges; do you share when you’re struggling or just keep it all inside? Do you allow yourself to feel the sadness as easily as you experience the joy? I think it’s so important to feel all the feelings and when it feels like too much, that we reach out to someone who will listen.

Going through my mother’s things

I spent the weekend going through my mother’s things. It was filled with so many memories. I laughed. I cried and took a long walk down memory lane. She kept every single card I ever gave her. They were all tied together with a satin ribbon. I had been dreading doing this task, but sitting here today, it was such a healing process. Life is short…keep the cards.

Controlling everything

I have a friend who on the outside appears to have everything, but unfortunately, she also has the need to control everything, which makes enjoying life extremely difficult. I can relate because once upon a time, I was exactly the same way. Cindy “Control Everything” Laverty should have been my name. Once I woke up to the fact that I only have control over how I show up in the world, everything changed and in a really good way. There’s huge freedom in letting go of control.

I Cry Easier These Days

Okay HUMANS! I volunteer weekly at our local animal shelter and the things I see that HUMANS do to these innocent dogs is beyond comprehension. 90% of all the dogs in our care are OWNER SURRENDER! 90%! What in the hell is wrong with people? Some of them are so shut down that they won’t come out of their kennel. Some are aggressive because...

Finding beauty

On days when I don’t feel like working, I come here and I sit and literally do nothing except soak up the beauty and think how fortunate I am that this is where I live.

Thoughts on life

“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and being alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on Earth. You have to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes too near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself that you tasted as much as you could.” Louise Erdich

Remembering Normandy

I will never forget this day in Normandy. Visiting the American Cemetery literally took my breath away. So before the cook-outs and the sales, maybe pause and remember.

Thoughts on aging

It’s amazing to me that after the age of 65, most of society thinks you somehow, overnight become sick, unable to do activities of daily living, need help with all things and God forbid, you should still be working. I’ve actually never been more active because I finally know how to take care of myself so I can live each day to its fullest.

Forgiveness

“Forgiveness isn’t a welcome back party. It’s just you deciding that what they did doesn’t get to live in your body or mind anymore. The door can stay closed and your heart can still be free.” Justin Owens

Powerful and true.
