The US did same thing (almost) in Iran - deposed the democratically elected prime minister Mossadegh after he nationalized their oil.

If they could no longer augment their # of reps with the 3/5 of former slaves, how did the 1870 census give them more power? Because they could then count former slaves as whole persons?
