On making art accessible
[If accessibility is to mean anything beyond visibility, it must also create the conditions for sustained looking, slower learning, and continued return.

Immersing yourself deeply in artistic pursuits and passions you love, in however shape or form will slowly change your life. It is perhaps one of the tiny yet mighty ways to move forward in life through a dark phase in your life. It is an antidote to despair when despair is a language you have become used to. Try it.

There is something very particular about being told, “thank you for sharing.” Sharing is not easy. It requires a level of exposure that most people instinctively resist. To put something personal or considered into the world, without control over how it will be received, is a deliberate act. So when that act is acknowledged, and met with gratitude, it signals more than appreciation. It suggests that what was shared was not only seen, but received with care.

[to return someone to a sound they thought they might never physically encounter again is to return them, briefly, to a prior version of themselves. That is no small gesture

[This is one of modernity’s great failures: it has taught too many people to misrecognise value. What appears lowly is often only that which has fallen outside urban codes of beauty. But rural knowledge has always been more disciplined than that.

[The question, then, is not only how we expand access to jazz, but how we design the conditions under which it can be properly received. Jazz does not reveal itself under just any circumstances. It requires a density of attention. A shared discipline between those who play and those who listen. Without that, something essential is lost. Not the music, but the depth at which it can be encountered.
